Gardens as Political Discussion
Gardens are political. In cities across the world, gardens serve both to advance and/ or to challenge the capitalist ideology of nature as something cheap. Reasons why gardens are political and that we discussed in our zoom meetings are:
Landscaping and gardening express in material form particular world-views (ideas about nature and society; meanings and values)
Gardens enunciate and perform particular patterns of exclusion and inclusion.
They make visible power struggles among groups with different world-views of what a garden should be, for whom it should be and what should their uses be (for example: production or recreation).
Gardens serve to regulate access to and control of green spaces in particular ways.
Gardens demand a lot of labor, in some cases, impossible engineering
Gardens enable community alliances and social networking.
Use these ideas above and others you thought about and think about a garden that you know, or elaborate in one of the ones that we saw in class materials (LA garden, Vienna garden
