Bloomington Religion and State Questions Assignment Project
I’m working on a history question and need guidance to help me study.
- Why was its religion rather than the state that first began to reorganize the chaotic world of early medieval Europe?
- Explain how and why Germanic kingship differed from Roman imperial government. Why did Germanic kingship meet the needs of its time?
- Why was Islam able within a century of Muhammad’s death to conquer much of the territory of the old Roman Empire? Why were Muslims able to fix these lands firmly under Muslim control?
- How and why did the eastern Roman Empire become what we think of today as Byzantine? How did the Byzantine Empire come to differ in culture, religion, language, politics, and society from the west?
- Discuss Charlemagne’s greatest achievements. Why is he often considered to be the “Father of Europe”?
- How did court culture and education change under Charlemagne? How did the culture of Charlemagne’s court differ from the popular culture and lives of ordinary people of that age?
- What do the images of churches, mosques, and art from the Bible reveal about this period? Why are these images included in our textbook?
- Have a look at Figure 7.1 “An Early Medieval Manor.” What can this figure tell us about the experience of peasants who lived in these villages in the medieval period? What were their lives like? Connect your comments with specific information from the text.
- The section “what a difference a year makes” provides insight into the differences between the traditions of Germanic kingship and the new Christian order that Charlemagne and then Louis tried to create. What happened? Respond to our authors’ question: “Why was Louis the Pious’ commitment to empire either a bold or a foolish idea?”
- The section “other voices, other views” focuses on Dhouda a noble woman and mother. What do you make of our authors’ question: “Make a case that Dhouda was either and insider or an outsider.”?
- Who were the Vikings and why did they begin to raid the European continent during the reign of Charlemagne? What impact did the Vikings have on the history of Europe?
- How did the rise of Islam affect the many Europe’s, east and west? What do you make of the argument described in the “investigating the past” pull out section that “Charlemagne, without Mohammad, would be inconceivable.”?
- How does the opening anecdote of Charlemagne’s coronation set the stage for the material in this chapter? In what ways was Charlemagne similar to or different from an Emperor like Augustus?
Was the Carolingian Empire an exceptional or a natural development of the post-Roman world?
