Educational Debt and Opportunity Gap Discussion
I’m working on a writing discussion question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.
In their text, Rio and Longoria (2021) give us a brief history of how communities of color have been impacted historically and in schools today. They highlight how anyone who was Black was not allowed to be educated, leading to students being taught to read in secret. They were then placed in segregated schools along with other students of color until Brown vs. Board of Education passed in 1954. They also talked about the cultural erasure of Latinx and Indigenous students, or any students entering into schools with different forms of knowledge, language, or culture. Though we have come a long way, the education system is still stunted in many ways by dominant ideologies and practices that have harmed students with multiple identities.
Consider all the identities you take on: race, gender, sexuality, dis/ability, language, religion, socioeconomic status, etc. Each of these identities privilege or oppress us in different ways and in the different contexts we find ourselves in.
Choose one of those identities and use one of the resources below to locate an article/video/podcast that highlights or connects to the opportunity gap to explain how students holding these identities have fared in schools and what they offer/don’t offer.
Include how that identity has been privileged or oppressed in school settings/society
If and how schools have provided or limited opportunities for students holding these identities to be successful
