Nixon’s legacy was pretty healthy up until the Watergate scandal, but other than that he did many major events that overall improved the country. He finally started to draw back the American troops from the Vietnam war, and the war ended under his presidency even if it took a long time. America finally reached the moon and it was even before the Russians, which was a major feat not only for Americans but for mankind. The environmental protection agency was a major improvement for the safekeep of nature in America. However, the Watergate scandal just made people forget about all the good that happened under Nixon, and focus on the potential bad side that nobody knew about until that event. Even through all the bad, I’d say that Nixon was a pretty average to decent president. Carter’s legacy can be summed up to helping the Israeli treaty and boycotting the Olympics; Carter just didn’t have many major memorable events during his presidency. I think that Carter can be a very forgettable president that didn’t do much for the country.

The high point of Nixon’s legacy was his travel to China and the subsequent establishment of diplomatic ties between the US and Mainland Communist China. This was a brave move from a politician who was known for his anti-communist stance. His pivot to China was a superb Strategic ploy and a counterbalance to the Soviet Union. Not to mention Nixon’s detente strategy and the SALT agreement, which helped to ease tensions between the US and the Soviet Union. The Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty was born from this focus on compromise. Nixon was, without a doubt, the most polished and accomplished foreign policy practitioner. In terms of domestic policy, he was a progressive. He founded the Environmental Protection Agency, and affirmative action helped keep the space program alive.
Carter’s record may be considered a legacy of failures, with The Hostage Crisis in the late 1970s being one of his most severe failures. Carter was also criticized for failing to improve the economy in the United States. When Carter became office, the country was experiencing high unemployment, rising inflation, and the effects of a lack of energy.
