HUM 141 Oppression & Social Position LGTBQ Studies
In your initial post, restate Allison Bailey’s definition of “oppression” in your own terms. Then, consider a time an event or circumstance in your life when something bad happened to you. Briefly recount relevant details, and then determine if Allison Bailey would consider this an expression of oppression or not. Consider things like:
What were your own social positions? What larger social identity groups did/do you belong to that influenced the experience, positive or negative?
Consider things like the histories associated with your identity or personal history, the way your social group belongings are portrayed in media, etc.
What were the social positions of others involved? How did their identity group inclusions – the ones you knew about and could confirm – influence the outcome?
What observable aspects about the experience could not be described by such identity group categories, particularly with respect to the people involved? What about who someone is or how they acted, that could not be reduced to identity group, influenced the situation?
