In this course we have examined how mass culture is discussed and understood, yet culture is ever changing and ever evolving depending on the passage of time and how we interpret the symbols we see around us.
In 1902 there were no cell phones to take quick pixs of nature, so the experience of interacting with nature was the artist’s focus NOT the memory of that experience.
Paul Cezanne painted the same mountain, (Mont Sainte Victoire) over and over again spanning many years. The above images are both representations of this mountain, the first painted in 1887 and the second in 1902. What is different about these images? What do you think Cezanne was trying to accomplish, or discover in these two renditions? How are they the same and how are they different and why? And, more importantly, do you think the shifting European culture contributed to the difference in how he painted each of these images?
