Low health literacy is noted to be a barrier to medication adherence. (AHA, 2014) Another barrier is fragmented care. Unfortunately, patients treat the ER like a PCP ; all the care and follow-up they receive is what is given there.
The link below gives an overview of how much medication nonadherence costs our nation. Although care at the ER is a brief encounter that is designed to stabilize the patient until they can seek follow-up care. What steps might help these patients be adherent with their medications and plan for further care?
