Race and Ethnicity in Film Identifying Theme & Thesis Discussion
I’m working on a communications writing question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.
You may use any film except those covered in this class! Once you’ve identified a film, you should screen the film at least once and then create a list of themes. What types of themes does the filmmaker explore in this film? How do those films connect to ideas about representation, race (racism), ethnicity, etc. ? Be specific. Finally, choose one theme and write a thesis statement that argues how this theme intersects with the ideas of race, ethnicity and/or representation that we’ve studied in this class.

Tulane University Panopticon Communications Essay
Write short essay of 500-1000 words using at least 3 examples from our texts/
discussions that compares and contrasts 2-3 (not more) of the larger concepts from this
semester. For example, Spectacle and Surveillance (how they are related and
different?). Are there better ideas or areas of study that help to sum up what we’ve
studied this semester?
If you need more: It would be easy to think that Foucault’s theory of the Panopticon (and
docile bodies) equates to people behaving themselves for fear of being arrested and the
suggestion that we’re being surveilled means we behave ourselves even when there
are no authorities present. How is his theory more complex and subtle (more
ideological, maybe) and how does it connect to other ideas of his we’ve discussed and/
or read about? What creative media works (or other ideas) can you use to support your
arguments about these ideas and how they connect and operate?
You may compare any themes, concepts, or media, from the course, but be sure to use
specific examples to support your ideas and to say how they do so. This means you
need to move past just saying a film (or other media) is about X and say how it is about
X. You may need some research to answer this question. Be sure to cite the work of
others at the end as necessary.
