People outside the criminal justice system often use the terms probation and parole interchangeably, but they are not the same. Probation and parole officers work with different populations, they are employed by different agencies, and—although overlapping—these officers have different goals.
In this Journal, you contemplate the difference between probation and parole and whether you are supportive of both. Then you examine the role of community supervision (i.e., probation and parole) in the criminal justice system.
