In my opinion, mental health is the ability process things that challenge our well being. The ability to deal with and heal from trauma. Mental health is our ability to solve problems or the lack of. There are a few stigmas about mental health that I have heard growing up. There was a always a stereotype associated with individuals who may be suffering from mental illness. We often called them “crazy“. As a kid we didn’t understand the scope of what a person was dealing with internally. We only saw what they presented on the outside. Those individuals who may have extraordinary habits or respond to situations we deem normal in a peculiar way.
We mock, laugh, or are even afraid of things we don’t understand. The most glaring stigma is people with mental health issues are crazy. It sounds harsh but it‘s the truth. I have been guilty of this as well throughout my younger years. As I grew older and started to understand the world, I now know those individuals were not crazy but suffering internally. Mental illness is a scary and unpredictable illness to deal with.
My desire to learn more and apply my knowledge stems from my childhood. Growing up around individuals who I know can say had mental health issue. Some have passed on and some are still dealing with those issues. I am currently a teacher and I can notice some of my students may have traumatic issues they are dealing with as well. I hope to use this course and master’s degree to help those in my arena and community. Possibly becoming a listening ear and a beacon of change and healing.
