JUSTIN’S POST:

I think the idea of using voluntary programs and standards is a great idea. It can allow a business to improve its self-image as well as help with controlling pollution. However, the use of voluntary programs has its drawbacks as well. Since it is voluntary, no business is required to follow the guidelines and if a majority of businesses decided not to follow them, the program will be of no real use. I think the best way to take advantage of voluntary programs is to give certain benefits to those who take part. This would give a business a monetary motive to take part in the program.

MOLLIE’S POST:

Considering that authorities are put on strict guidelines, I think we should take incitive to help maintain pollution. For instance, starting in our home and city first. Simple things, such as recycling plastic and glass is a major step toward our pollution problems. Factories that make plastic and glass let off several toxins, so we can reduce the amount of plastic and glass being produced by simply reusing or putting in the recycle bin. The more the State and Federal agencies step in the more people tend to resist, so I think the best way to handle pollution is for us to take the step in doing our part on our own. We should want to be the change!
